About
Hi, I’m Rita. I’ve practiced IP law for over twenty years. But before I ever went to law school, I was trained as an engineer.
ESQed is the unexpected collision of those two worlds.
The Intersection of Law and Engineering
A lot has changed since I started practicing. The postcards and express labels are gone; the law now lives entirely in bits and bytes. Today, the USPTO hides its best secrets in plain sight—publicly available, but buried so deep that most files never see the light of day.
A few years ago, I found myself staring at a particularly brutal Office Action. I was completely stuck, acutely missing the "hallway wisdom" of my Big Law days where I could easily seek guidance from the firm's knowledge base (aka their massive document repository).
The lawyer in me was frustrated. But the engineer in me (thanks, MIT) saw a data challenge:
How do I build a system that turns the treasure trove of USPTO documents into a knowledge base for the little guys? How do I extract the hidden patterns, strategies, and insights that help IP practitioners improve their craft?
My Mission with ESQed
I am building ESQed to help solo and small-firm IP practitioners elevate their practice.
ESQed aims to:
- Deliver High-Value, IP-Specific CLEs: No fluff, no box-checking, and no dry webinars. Just practical tips and data-driven insights that actually impact your daily practice.
- Foster a Vetted Community: A modern digital hallway where attorneys can bounce ideas around, share what works, and learn and grow together.
- Keep Your Edge Sharp: Combining big data with real human connection so we can all become better lawyers tomorrow than we are today.
This is a work in progress, and I’m building it as I go. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner looking for your digital hallway, a junior attorney eager to build true mastery, or just a fellow IP nerd—I’d love to connect.
